Nell Robinson presents Rose of No Man's Land with Ramblin' Jack Elliott

Description

The songs of Nell Robinson & The Rose of No-Man’s Land integrate the heritage of her own Alabama family’s history since her ancestor John Robinson led the Pilgrims into the New World. The music and song collection stands on its own for its originality and beauty. The addition of her family lore – captured in old letters, poetry and stories passed down generation to generation - spans 250 years of involvement in every major war since the American Revolution, at times fighting against each other as in the Civil War or against war itself. The album, guided by Grammy Winning producer Joe Henry, weaves intimate familial history with Robinson's lush vocal quality and artisan storytelling, and in live performance Nell creates an engaging collective experience audiences love.
Nell Robinson & The Rose of No-Man’s Land was released in November, distributed by Compass Records. A PBS Special rolled out late fall with the series ‘Music Gone Public.” The show originated 6 years ago and went on to receive a standing ovation at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. As the show evolved, the potent and non-partisan album revealed itself and began production under Henry’s direction in 2012.

On the record, additional special guests include musical, theater and literary icons: actor, poet and musician John Doe; actor and songwriter Kris Kristofferson; as well as award-winning author Maxine Hong Kingston; and Emmy-winner Kathy Baker. Featured on the PBS cast are: Ramblin' Jack Elliott, John Doe and Maxine Hong Kingston.

"Robinson's roots are fleshed out in vivid detail, especially on lead single "Scots Irish" -- a speedy mandolin number…” The Bluegrass Situation

“NELL ROBINSON engages in musical genealogy with her project “The Rose of No Man’s Land,” which tells the story of ancestors who have been involved in every major American war since the country’s birth via songs from the Revolutionary War forward and stories, letters, and poetry from her Alabama family.” - The Boston Globe

"What’s most interesting about it is that none of these songs are didactic or preachy: they let the war stories and veterans’ laments speak for themselves…” - NY MUSIC DAILY
